Our office offers a medical abortion by the pill Mifeprex (formerly known as RU 486). This is a non-invasive procedure which is offered during the first 56 days of pregnancy. Pregnancy must be verified by ultrasound to confirm eligibility for medical abortion. It is between 95%-97% effective.

The patient will need to visit our office two times for this type of abortion. The first visit will include lab work, ultrasound, counseling, pelvic exam and administration of the Mifeprex tablet. Mifeprex blocks the hormone progesterone, and without progesterone, the pregnancy fails to continue. At this visit the patient will also receive 4 misoprostol tablets (Cytotec), along with prescriptions that must be filled. These tablets will need to be inserted 24-72 hours after the administration of the Mifeprex.

The insertion of the misoprostol tablets can be performed by the patient alone in the privacy of her home, but she will need to return to our office in 2-3 weeks to confirm that the pregnancy has ended. This will be done by ultrasound and exam.

As with a surgical abortion, there are several things to remember before coming for an abortion appointment. Failure to bring some or all of the items listed may result in having to reschedule an appointment. Click here for a list of things to consider before coming in for an abortion.
